UK artist Shucks One Is an Artist, Radio DJ, Youth worker and journalist specialising in hip-hop music and culture.

With this exhibition he presents a unique visual collection celebrating the themes of consciousness, positive attributes and important figures in Classic UK and US Hip-hop culture, discussing its wider implications on modern culture.

"Little Daddy Street Sweeper"by Shucks One (Detail)

Through painting Shucks One has developed a way of expressing and contextualising the history of modern day street music and art. Using a variety of objects as canvasses, such as furniture, clothing, masks and found wood, Shucks One creates a sketchbook, a mix tape way of exhibiting work, going back to the core ethics of street music and art. Using bold colours, pattern reminiscent of tribal fabric prints and ancient symbols Shucks One discusses themes of cultural heritage.

“The term ‘old school’ is often banded around without any real understanding of the underlying themes. With this series of works I intend to explore messages and concepts, not just from hip-hop, but human history as well. It is part history lesson, part hip hop project.”

‘Foundation Rocks’ combines a series of portraits, illustrations and sculpture, capturing the original hip hop mantras of ‘peace, love, and unity; knowledge, wisdom and understanding’, presenting a challenge to the dominating themes of violence, negativity and corporatism which resonate throughout hip-hop today. The project is the artists’ search to rediscover these foundation principles by retracing the history of UK hip hop music and the individuals making it. It is an attempt to cement the originators of UK hip hop as icons for British music fans, who are often more familiar with the originators in the US.

The exhibition is a visual interpretation of interviews Shucks One conducted with hip hop pioneers of the 1980s, whose music influenced a whole generation of young men and women in the UK. The works addresses issues of history, identity and religion.

Shucks One will be donating a percentage of any sales made from the exhibition and will also be holding a raffle on the night of the private view to raise money for the charity WAYout.

WAYout Charity provides arts and media training to disadvantaged and street youth in Sierra Leone. In 2010 it worked with over 600 young people who explored subjects as diverse as street life, HIV and teenage

pregnancy, using music, comedy, soap opera and documentary. Their films have reached audiences in excess of 35,000 people. Users now tell us they want a base. A place where they can write, rehearse,

learn, edit, shoot, show their work or just exchange ideas and support each other. The Hub/ arts centre is the natural next step and is what we are currently fundraising for.

Cormega is an MC from Queens Bridge Projects, home of some of the most influential Hip-Hop acts ever. In the mid 80’s Marley Marl and the Juice Crew were dominating the Hip-Hop landscape. What many people don’t know is that Marley recorded many of his classic records in his Apartment in Queensbridge Projects, and many of the Juice Crew members MC Shan, Roxanna Shante, Tragedy and others are from Queensbridge.

Although most people are familiar with the Mega reference in Nas’s song, Cormega’s first time on wax was in 1989, MC Cor aka Cormega as a guest on Legendary Queens Bridge Block Party DJ – DJ Hot Day on the Tuff City released Going Straight Up featuring early Bridge MC Arkim and Shahid

Originally supposed to be a member of the super group The Firm headed by Nas, he found himself replaced by fellow Queens MC Nature, and his is debut album release postponed. His first album The Realness was released in (2001), an experience Mega feels is a blessing in disguise, as it prepared him for his future as an Independent artist.

For much of the early 90’s, as Nas and Mobb Deep were blowing up, Cormega was incarcerated. Shucks One was asked by Vans to contribute in a international traveling Charity Exhibit and Auction in 2004 Surfers Against Sewage and Regain. The brief was "Dead Party Guys", and the artist chose to paint them in blue tones, and used Luxury brands like Gucci & Louie Vitton etc., and added some funny hats... It was funny to paint it, and hopefully it has brightened the place up!!!

" The Jungle" - High View School 2004

In 2004 Shucks One, Tizer and Relay were invited back to High View school after the success of the other 3 murals in the school playground. This time as it was in the older children's playground 8-10years old, the artists hosted several drawing workshops and discussed with the children to decide which animals they would like to have on the wall. The young people all really enjoyed the drawing and seemed to feel proud that their animals ended up on the wall. The young people also block filled in the darker greens with Emulsion, as they were too young to use spray paint. These photo were taken in 2010, and after a serious battering in the elements and a million balls hitting the mural it still looks good!

As art of They Made Me Do It, I was commissioned to design a T-Shirt for U.S. Hip-Hop/Graffiti brand Ecko Unltd. Personally, I felt that it was important to use the high profile opportunity to salute the recent (2003) passing of South London Graffiti writers Mood and Vizo, and two New York Writers and friends of mine, EKO and Dr Seus who had passed away in 1995.

The shirts were limited and numbered to 100, and were available exclusively in select stores in the main cities in the U.K. They gained quite a bit of attention from the Music and Fashion press.

To show my respect, I remixed one of the God Heads from my "True Mathematics" series to show my respect for Guru of legendary Hip-Hop group Gangstarr who recently passed away of cancer. He actually saw the t-shirt with his head on it, which was pretty strange. I have been messing around a lot on photoshop, for new series of Hip-Hop inspired illustrations.

Shucks One organised a Hip-Hop and Graffiti showcase at the Lee Jeans Flagship Store on Carnaby Street London. The ID Crew exhibited commissioned new works on Denim and Leather in the shop. On the Saturdays ID Crew were on hand to customize customers jeans. Every Saturday for a month, Shucks organized for Hip-Hop artists to perform in the window, DJ Furious (Itch FM), DJ Steez (Peoples Army, Itch FM), DJ Dex and Kyza (Terrafirma), and many others.

Amicus Bus Glastonbury 2005

Shucks & Tizer painted the Amicus Union bus for the Glastonbury Music Festival in 2005. The universal theme for 2005’s Left Field was international workers solidarity with debates and exhibitions themed around Make Poverty History. Amicus had its own double decker bus, which had been graffitied by Tizer & Shucks to read "This bus kills poverty."

"Dirty Laundry" Art Show - Dalston Superstore 2009

The Kool Skool's Shucks One displayed a new painting at an exciting mix of contemporary artists at the Dalston Super Store in East London. The show was called Dirty Laundry and the artists were been asked to intemperate the phrase into new works.

Shuck's piece is based on the Mohammed El Gharani and Omar Khadr, the two have been held without formal charges in Quantanamo Bay since 2001, and arrived as teenagers.

Mohammed was just 14 years old and Omar 15 when they arrived at Camp X-Ray, and are still being detained despite a US Federal Judge ordering the immediate release of Mohammed, and Judges in Canada are ordering that the government pressure the US government for his repatriation. The piece "Summer Camp X-Ray" is hoped by the artist to raise awareness about the two men's status and situation, and inspire debate.

RocknRolla Movie Commission 2008

Shucks One (ID) & Dane (VOP) painted live in Clapham South London last year, to promote the new Guy Richie movie "Rocknrolla".

The project consisted of live street painting, and are based the artists interpretations of what a painting features that in the film looked like. 6 artists did them all over London. Others included Insa, Solo One VOP, Panik ATG and others.

My peace was called Revelation 1:14, after the chapter in the bible, about the end of the world. In Rocknrolla, the Russian Oligarch character has a painting which is part of the sub-plot. In the movie you only see the back of the painting, but as the character is an ex-Soviet Billionaire, I assumed he probably identifies with the Russian Orthodox Church, so I painted a Byzantine style Icon.

I'm really interested in Orthodox Icons, it is well known that in Islam it is blasphomous to make artistic interpretations of living things, as it is raising yourself to the status of God, thus the arrogance of man.

But in the Jewish Talmudic tradition it is the same, and as Christianity is from that tradition and number 2 of the 10 Commandments deals with what, "Graven Images", surely it is the same? There is discussion of the early Christians destroying Icons, surrogates and intermediates to God, and of course the Reformation dealt with much of the same issues.
